Tri Peaks Solitaire is a fun, and popular solitaire game, combining elements of Golf Solitaire and Pyramid Solitaire. It has an interesting scoring system, which can lead to much higher scores when you DON’T play all the moves you can.

There are 2 keys to getting a high score in Tri Peaks Solitaire
Clear each Peak.
Form long sequences.

You get quite a lot of points for clearing a peak. You get 15 points for clearing the first peak, 15 points for clearing the second peak, and then 30 points for clearing the last peak. Thats a total of 60 points, which shows that it is definitely worth while getting rid of all the peaks, and unless you can form an incredibly long sequence, it’s always worth trying to clear the peaks.

The second key to doing well at Tri Peaks Solitaire is to form really long sequences, where you do not deal a card from the talon.

The TriPeaks scoring system will give you one additional point for every card you move in a sequence. So the first card you move gives you one point, the next card gives you two points, the next card gives you three points, and the next card gives you four points, etc. The sequence ends as soon as you deal from the talon, and the sequence begins at one point again.

This system is interesting because it often makes sense to not move cards as soon as you can.

There are 2 ways to illustrate this.

What do you think the difference in scoring would be between one 12long sequence versus two 6long sequences? Most people know the long sequence will outscore the shorter sequences, but not many people realise by how much!

The 12 long sequence gives us a score of 123456789101112, which is 78.

Surely the two 6long sequences won’t be too far behind?
Well, we get 123456 for the first sequence. And then we 123456 for the second sequence.

The total is only 42! Even though the same number of cards were removed, the difference in scores is 36 points!

Another way to illustrate this is to see what would happen if we extend out a long sequence.

What if instead of 12 card in the sequence, we could somehow remove 14 cards in sequence instead? Well, that would give us an extra 1314 points, which is 27 extra points.

Adding two cards extra on the 12 card sequence almost resulted in as many points as two 6card sequences!

As you can see, it really pays to form one really long sequence. You need to make sure you form one sequence of atleast 10 cards before you start getting a reasonable score.

Now, when TriPeaks Solitaire starts, you normally find you can form a reasonably long sequence. But rarely is it more than 10 cards. Don’t use that sequence until you have studied the tableau carefully!

Look at the cards above the bottom layer. Look for a lot of cards all around the same rank. See if you can see any long sequences. When you do, see what cards are covering that sequence, and then work to remove those. DON’T remove cards that could make that sequence longer, even if you can play them in shorter sequences before hand. You want to aim for one sequence, as long as you can humanly make, to get really good scores in Tri Peaks Solitaire.

This has to be balanced against the first key though, which is to uncover the peaks. You don’t want to hold on too long for that perfect sequence, because it may mean that you don’t get to uncover the peaks.

Play a few games with the above in mind, and you’re sure to see your Tri Peaks scores increase in no time!

4. Build on higher cards first

Among the “out of suit” builds, start with those of highest rank. The reason for this is apparent. You can not move “out of suit” build as a unit to another pile. So this build is of no use except as a temporary storage for cards from other piles. If we start with low card, the build will be finished with an Ace very quickly and then it will be useless. Starting from higher cards allows us to get maximum advantage from it.

5. Get as many cards exposed and arranged in suit order as possible before dealing the next 10 cards from the stock

Otherwise your chances of winning are significantly reduced.

6. As soon as you remove a suit, arrange the remaining cards into “natural builds”

Use empty piles as temporary storage when rearranging cards.

Spend some time practicing this strategy and soon you will find yourself beating Spider Solitaire faster and more often.

Freecell is quite a hard game, but despite that, all deals (except for deal number 11982) are solvable in the 32000 deals in Microsoft’s version.

USING FREECELLS WISELY

The key to finishing Freecell is judicious use of the freecells. They should be used as temporary storage only storing cards in them for a short time to help you move longer sequences around.

For example, suppose you had a column with the following (taken from deal 14396)
5 Hearts
Ace Spades
Ace Hearts
4 Clubs

In this situation, it is okay to move the 4 of Clubs to a freecell, because we know that right after that, we can move the two Aces to the foundation, and then move the 4 of Clubs back from the freecell onto the 5 of Hearts. See how the freecell was only used temporarily?

SAFE MOVES

There are certain moves you can make at any time in Freecell and know it wont “trap” you later on in the game. You can move the Aces (and the twos when they can be played), at any time, as no other cards depend on them. For the other cards, you can safely move them to the foundation if the cards one less in rank, of the opposite color, are already in the foundation. For example, you can safely move the 5 of Diamonds, if the black 4s have already been moved to the foundation.

Better Freecell games will automatically do these safe moves for your, so you can concentrate on the moves that matter, rather than having to manually make inconsequential moves.

THE NEED TO EMPTY COLUMNS

Your first goal in Freecell is to empty a column.

Why is this?

Because an empty column allows you to move longer sequences around. The size of the sequence you can move in Freecell is based on the number of available freecells and empty columns. The more empty freecells and columns you have, the longer the sequence is that you can move.

The formula for how many cards you can move is
(number of empty freecells 1) 2 (num empty columns)

For the less mathematically inclined, here is a table showing how many cards you can move in some different scenarios…

As you can see, empty columns are particularly valuable, as they allow you to move considerably longer sequences. By the time you have two columns free (particulaly with two or more freecells free), you can move very long sequences, and the game is usually quite easy to complete from there.

HOW TO EMPTY COLUMNS

So what is the easiest way to empty a column?

Start by emptying columns that don’t have any Kings in them. A column with a king can’t be emptied initially, because there is nowhere for the King to go.

Don’t just make moves because you can. Have some mini plan in mind, and only move cards if they help empty the column you are aiming for.

Another popular strategy is just to go straight for releasing the Aces, and then the 2’s, etc. This strategy is easier, and requires less thought. It will work for the easier games, but won’t help on the hard deals (such as deal 1941)

The most important strategy of all though, is to try and keep the freecells empty. If you can do that, and empty a couple of columns as well, then you should find it very easy to finish the game.
